UDS is committed to securing taxpayer information. The tax return in prepared on the taxpayer's own computer and only upon taxpayer selection, the return is encrypted and then transmitted. This process is explained below. Taxpayer's start their return by clicking on the "click here to start" button on UDS website. Taxpayers then prepare their return on their computer. Taxpayers can stop/restart their return by clicking on the UDS icon on their computer; there is no transfer of information to UDS. When the taxpayer has completed their return, the taxpayer can elect to file electronically. The taxpayer first selects the "Make ready to transmit" tab. The program than automatically audits the return and, if no errors, generates the appropriate e-file Screen Language for the taxpayer to view and "sign". The return is then encrypted and automatically transmitted to UDS web site server located in Atlanta, Georgia. The server computer then contains a series of files, each file being an encrypted return and thus secure. Twice daily, the encrypted returns are downloaded to UDS Service Center. At UDS Service Center, the returns are automatically decrypted. For Federal returns this automatic decryption results in IRS-ready files which are than transmitted to the appropriate IRS service center. This transmission incorporates Secure Socket Layer (SSL) with a telnet/s protocol and interface to the IRS gateway to the Front End Processing System (FEPS). UDS stores the encrypted tax returns and a log file is updated. This log file contains basic/limited taxpayer information consisting of taxpayer name, taxpayer ssn, and taxpayer transmission  number which uniquely identifies the IRS and state transmissions and transmission status. The log file is encrypted. These files are physically and electronically protected and accessible by a single authorized person. Twice daily encrypted transmission status files are uploaded to UDS web server in Atlanta, Georgia. A taxpyer's transmission status is thus made available when the taxpayer selects the "Check transmission status" tab to ensure their return was accepted by the IRS and by the appropriate state agency. If their return was rejected by the IRS and/or state, the appropriate error-reject-code (ERC) explanation is provided within the taxpayer's downloaded, decrypted transmission status report. Taxpayers can correct whatever errors were specified and then re-transmit their return.
